There are a large number of various test each requiring different time scales to produce results, but normally patient requests for details of their laboratory results should be made 7 days after the test was taken.
Generally, the clinician will advise how many days to allow before telephoning or whether it is better to return to see the doctor again to discuss the results.
This allows time for the laboratory to return the result to the practice and the doctor to interpret it.
Some tests can take 14 days to produce a result, normally the clinician will inform you of this fact when requesting the test.
Cervical smear results are currently taking 6 weeks and are posted out to the patient directly by the laboratory.
Very occasionally test samples do not reach the intended laboratory and you may be asked to repeat the test.
Blood tests, urine tests and other samples are sent to the local laboratory by courier Monday to Friday. Samples should be handed before 12.30. Blood tests can be done by the practice nurse or nurse practitioner by appointment only.
Our admin staff are not qualified to comment on results. Therefore, it is your responsibility to check them and make any necessary follow-up. The receptionist will be able to let you know if the doctor wants to see you or if the result of your test requires further action.
Please note that we do have a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection and reception staff are no longer allowed to view patient data in order to release test results. Test results will be given by a GP or a nurse. In order to obtain this information, you have the following options:
1. Please call between 2.00pm and 3.00pm everyday except Wednesday to speak with Kathleen, the Practice Nurse. She will be able to give you the required information.
2. If you are unavailable at this time, please phone reception so the staff can schedule a call back from a clinician.
Please remember that test results are only given to the person to whom they relate unless that person has given prior permission for the release of this data or they are not capable of understanding the results.
Should you wish to nominate someone who can receive confidential medical information on your behalf please complete a Third Party Consent Form and return to the Practice.
